2009 7DRL – dL1

I don’t think when Legend of Angband said this 7DRL was “complete” that the meaning was to imply it was playable, only that the time was up. Congratulations on getting a program up, but a game this is not.

The first hint that something was amiss was when the instructions for playing included opening a command window. Every 7DRL I’ve reviewed that did not make the user experience as seamless as possible is a red flag. Python apps that did not use py2exe, C programs distributed as code, and this, a java app without a batch file with a single line in it. There’s a lesson here. Learning to develop for the end user experience is a serious step towards maturity.

When you do run this game it becomes immediately evident that there is something wrong. Some maps have inaccessible sections. You move, but the monsters do not, unless you attack one. But you can wander the map within inches of the sleeping dragons and they will not pay you any mind. What is this, Frodo’s quest? Collect all the gold and nothing happens. Fight the dragons and you may kill one or two but you’ll die eventually. And were it possible to clear the map would anything happen?

I hope Legend of Angband’s doesn’t take offense at my throwing his attempt under the bus. I recognize that beginner programmers should be given some leeway and encouragement, but stopping development does not make a game “complete .” Finish this one, make it winnable somehow, and try again Legend of Angband.
