Tomb of Rawdin – Stu George

Tomb or Rawdin’s strength is that it’s a simple dungeon crawler without fluff or pomp. It’s weakness is that it’s only a simple dungeon crawler without any fluff or pomp to set it apart from all the other dungeon crawlers out there. Don’t get me wrong, in only 7 days Stu manages to program a game with line of sight, inventory, stats, tons of weapons, potions, scrolls, and all the stuff you’d expect in a dungeon crawler. Oh, and it’s real time which seems to be a bit of a hidden theme in this years 7 day roguelike challenge. Over all it’s an excellent and a promising game from a promising developer.
The object of the game is to descend the dungeon, destroying the guardian statues and… do something at level 10. In truth I haven’t gotten that far. Move with the arrow keys, ‘i’ for inventory, ‘u’ to use something in your inventory, the apostrophe to pick something up (a bit odd, that), ‘d’ to drop, and period to rest. When you can move to the next level use ‘<’ and ‘>’.
More than a few times I started the game surrounded by enemies I didn’t have the means to defeat. Other times I managed to get a pocket full of potions, weapons, and apparel before hitting my first bat. A little bit of effort to balance the game would go a long way.
I found the game a bit hard to get anywhere in until I discovered that there really isn’t any reason to attack every monster you encounter. Just find the statues to unlock the boss and collect all the stuff. After that I got much further, tho I have to admit I haven’t played the game long enough to beat it yet. Once you get started the difficulty seems balanced, tho the random element makes getting started a matter of luck most of the time.
In the end I have to say it’s not a bad dungeon crawler, tho it doesn’t do much to draw you in or give you much incentive to keep playing. The one really nice thing about this is that the developer is making the source code available so if you want to make your own dungeon crawler you can learn from the Tomb of Rawdin.
