The 2009 7DRL has ended and boasts a whopping 28 completed games. And I’ve played them all and reviewed them here for you. Crazy? You bet. But I’m just that sort of crazy for you. Crazy enough to help you sort out out which of the games are worth your time. You can bookmark this page and return when you finish playing one to decide which one you should play next.
For the uninitiated, 7DRL stands for a 7 day roguelike, the challenge being to make a roguelike game in 7 days. And for those not in the know a roguelike game is simply a game inspired by other roguelike games. Generally they’re text based, but not always. Generally they’re D&D type cRPGs, but not always. Generally they employ line of sight or area of sight mechanics, but not always. Sometimes they’re painfully difficult and sometimes they’re perfect for killing 5 minutes of a coffee break. The genre has gotten rather broad, as can be illustrated by the wide range of games below. Chances are there’s something there that you will enjoy.
So here are the 28 “completed” entries to the 2009 7DRL challenge. Now technically this isn’t a competition, but I don’t care. I say it should be. So after you play a couple and have had a chance to form an opinion come and vote for your favorite in the following categories. You have up to 5 votes per category but once you cast your vote you won’t be able to go back and change them. Polls will be open until the last day in April to give you plenty of time to make your opinions. Voting is over and the polls are closed. Click here for the results.

You guys are doing a great job reviewing the 7DRLs. It’s a fantastic to have someone spend time both playing the games and writing about them – a real payoff for the time spent creating them. Thanks!

Thank you for reviewing the games! Will post on roguetemple once you finish!

I released a binary for backwards gravity on the temple of the roguelike forum. Sorry it’s so late!

Fist of the Rogue Warrior by s.chiu has been removed from the list because I can’t get it to run, and neither can anyone else I know. Plus it was only listed as a “partial” success, so I’m going to call it not success enough to be on this list.

You should make a best game written by a total noob category so i can win something

When does the poll close?

Fixed. Thanks. I know I’d typed that at one point. It must have gotten edited out. Or it’s in a different post somewhere.

Note to self. In the future only have polls open for a few weeks, not a whole month. Already this is old news. Ah well. I committed to April 30th, so 10 more days.

I think I’m going to make a boobie prize for whatever one gets zero votes in any category. Unfortunately my advertising for the Favored got it a pitty vote, so it’s out of the running, but there’s a few still in it to win it.
