November 14th: EXTRA! ASCIIpOrtal 1.2 is out! Re-download for a decidedly enhanced experience.

See high res text graphics. Master physics bending puzzles. Escape the test chambers. Play ASCIIpOrtal!

ASCIIpOrtal is a unique puzzle game. You can create custom maps so even when the game is over the fun doesn’t need to end. Use a text editor (or the mostly functional map editor by Mads Lund) and share the maps you create on the ASCIIpOrtal forum.

ASCIIpOrtal is by Joe Larson with sounds designed by Steve Fenton. Original concept inspired by Increpare’s Portile game, Super Serif Bros, and Valve’s Portal. Source code is included in the zip. Simply unzip and play.

Original Videos/History

The ASCIIpOrtal development thread is where I determined to document the development process and publish interim builds in and still exists, documenting some of the cool things that have happened since. When it got to the point that I didn’t want folks playing it out and getting bored with it (about the time I added the actual portal mechanic) I stopped publishing interim builds and made a video showing it off. That video went crazy popular and can be found here:

What do you get when you turn robotfindskitten around? A snarkey Russian roulette with bunnies.

Download the Favored

You are a new adventurer who was leveling up in the fields around your starting village by killing rodents and other small animals when a rabbit you were chasing ran across a clearing, stopping only a few yards away. As you closed the distance to the creature the ground beneath you suddenly gave way and you found yourself falling into darkness. A trap? How could a rabbit set a trap?

Fortunately the rabbit’s plan seems to have been only half-baked for as soon as you awoke you found yourself in a huge rabbit down, but none of the other rabbits seem intent on harming you. You try to climb out, but the ceiling of the cave you’re in is too far away. Occasionally you see spots where you could get up if you had some rope or something.

Unknown to our adventurer this is the down of the Favored wherein on each level lives a rabbit favored of the rabbit gods. Killing this hallowed creature will bring down the wrath of an angry deity.

The Favored is similar to another text based game, Robotfindskitten, in reverse. Instead of searching around trying to find something you are drawn to hunt, hoping you won’t find something. With each successful kill the odds of picking a favored bunny get worse. Pay attention to the fraction between the bunnies on the left, that’s the probability that you’ll pick a favored, 1 out of how many rabbits there are. You can carry bunnies with you to the next level, but you may want to leave early to keep your chances from getting worse.

To keep the hunt fun you are encouraged with amusing little messages when you do a kill. Pay attention to them because they’re half the fun.

The Favored was written for the 2009 7DRL challenge.

Take Scorched Earth and launch it into space.

Download Gravity Whip for Windows

In 1996 I made my first “real” game. It was called Gravity Whip and combined all my favorite things, a short list of which would be Star Control, Scorched Earth, gravity models, Douglas Adams, and forced misconceptions. The final result is far from complete, The game has no sound and the menus are unpolished, but I haven’t gone back to it since 1996 owing to the fact that I left for a mission for my church to Singapore and two years is a long time to leave a project. By now the code is so antiquated that returning to finish it would be pointless, I’d basically end up staring the project over. However, for reference purposes (I guess) the code is included in the download.

I’m surprised it still runs at all. Stranger still is the fact that XP will run it but DOSBox won’t. I have no idea what I did that caused this program to function so strangely.

But I present this game to you as a special Christmas present. Think of it as a bit of baring my soul to you because there are parts of this I would prefer was lost to time. Still, there are also parts that are pretty cool and maybe you’ll find it amusing or inspiring. That story presented in MANUAL.TXT is one of those things I’d prefer were lost to time. I can’t even bring myself to read it now. And since the MANUAL.TXT shows how much I had yet to learn about making games accessible by making instructions that make sense, here are a few points to get you started.

When you get into the game you can press F1 to bring up a help screen. Here are the keys you will need to know:

F1 – Help

F10 – Exit

Left/right – Adjust angle

up/down – Adjust Power

L-Shift – Speed up adjustments

R-Shift – Fine tune adjustments

W – Change weapon

</> – Adjust Counter (The counter is used differently by different weapons for special effects)

If you can tolerate the oddities of the game it can actually be a lot of fun to play, especially when you do enough damage to a planet or sun to blow them up. Oh, did I mention you can blow up planets and suns?
