Cymons Games

Two years. Two years I’ve been running this site and finally, FINALLY, someone has the balls to tell me I’ve been doing it wrong. But do they do it to my face? No. Thank Google alerts. Running with flashlights said of this site:

I really like the games on those pages and the idea of learning to program by typing in code (and then playing the game and be able to change things around as you’d like), but in my opinion, much of the code posted is unreadable to a novice. For me personally, I’d hoped it to be a valuable resource, but the lack of comments or clear name conventions in the code make it quite difficult to figure out the logic. It should be said that not all programs are coded like this, the newer ones on the site are probably more interesting to check out if you’re looking for some help or inspiration. The maintainer of the site has said that the type-ins weren’t meant as a basic tutorial, but rather to show what kind of cool things you can make. I guess you do need some knowledge of C/C++ first! So, I see it more as something inspirational than anything else.

Yup. For the past 2 years I’ve been concerned with getting a weekly update, so I didn’t care if it was “good” code. Also I didn’t have time nor the inclination to write tutorials. There’s already so many out there why would I bother? What could I add that hasn’t already been done? Just plug along with the weekly updates. Plug along. Plug along.

Well, I’ve been saying things are going to change around here, tho I haven’t been real clear as to what and how. Recently I spent some time and prepped every program I had permission for to the site, emptying out my reserves. I am now running without a net and February 12th is my last new program, a program I wrote just last week as a matter of fact. Coincidentally that will be pretty close to my 2 year anniversary. 2 years of solid updates, not missing a single week.

I think I can afford to take a breath.

I plan on reviewing the old games, updating them, tagging them so that they can be categorized for easy reference, and re-featuring them on the site. I may even be able to maintain a weekly schedule. But I’m not going to stress about it. Naturally if you had a program you wanted to contribute I’d be thrilled to add it to the site.

But I’ve got some big projects I want to focus my time on. Not just ASCIIpOrtal (believe it or not I’m not done with that one yet), but some other things as well that are going to change the face of this site. “Like what” you ask? Well I’ll tell you.

Another time.
