Like the title says, this is where you share, critique, revise, and review new asciiportal maps.

Here is a level I made while toying around with the fling.  It requires mad ninja shoot/walk into portal/fire portal while falling/land in portal on ground skills towards the end.

Code:

Really good level Ratfink, but it was frustrating dieing right at the end after surviving all that. So I made a version with a much longer drop, more area to make mistakes, and it was much more enjoyable.

Here's a list of gags I've thought of but haven't made into levels yet:
  • A level where you have to divert boulders from one area to another to allow you to enter a passage or something. I'm imagining like two hour glasses on either side, but either way you enter one area, move the boulders to the one you were in, then enter another area and move boulders to where you moved the boulders before, etc.
  • A level where you have to walk across boulders moving in a group across a spike pit to get from one ladder dangling over the spike pit to another ladder opposite it.
  • A level with a number of switches where you have to guide boulders down different paths. Maybe there are boxes available (with ladders so you can approach from both sides) and then you hit a button and dispense a boulder to follow the "programmed" path or maybe you just have to run from switch to switch in time or the boulder will be destroyed and you'll have to start again. Or both. Could get 2 levels out of this idea.
  • ...uh... GAH
I can't remember the one idea that had me making this post. Dang it. I think it had something to do with ladders.

My first map - Cymon asked, and so I thought I'd have a go (mostly I just do sound stuff..)

Nothing complicated, and only old man reactions required. Hope the formatting gets through the <code> block - it doesn't look right to me. Anyway, here it be:

Yeah, the code tags don't look right, but they display right, as you can see.

Good little level. Had me stumped a few times. The actual solution seems a bit loose, I found myself asking if that was the way you meant for it to be beat or if I found some new way. But what the heck. You get to the end you win, right?

So here's one from the list of gags above (abused my mod privileges to make it all read better):
Code:
message:First, push the box and reverse the flow of the bouders.
message1:This switch only works right about half the time. You may have to clear it and try again.
message2:It's only out of mercy that I let you clear out your mistakes in the chamber below.
message3:Did you forget anything?

You'll notice the dispenser array on the right is simple and works 100% of the time, but the dispenser array on the left is strange and only works 50% of the time. It took a lot of thinking about the hows and whys before I found this, and after discovering that it only works have the time, which means I was lucky to get it to work at all. I made it so when it fails you can fry the box and try again, but you still have to traverse the moving platforms of death.

Well, good thing this isn't an official level. But when it does work it's kinda fun.

Right, and thanks :]

Though you're right too, if you mean the end is a little bit... loose. I kinda ran out of steam. Once you've passed through the first bit and hit the next switch it all gets a bit random, though I think you only have two real choices: aim high (hence the trust) and fall behind the boulders as they drop out of the dispenser, or stay low and somehow portal your way across the floor. The first option was sort of what I had in mind.

Or maybe you found some other way I haven't considered. I don't claim to be any good at level design!

Yours still has me stumped at the moment...

Added a message that may help.

EDIT: Threw together another one from the concepts above:

Well, conceptually it works, but it's not very interesting. 3 rooms that work this concept in the middle of a back-and-forth level would probably be enough.

Ooh, new idea, and why wasn't this in the game? A labyrinth of rooms that you must portal between because there's no walk ways. Some shot line ups room-to-room work out so that you shoot through middle rooms, forcing you to go the long way around to reach them. There were several levels like this in Portal the Flash Version.

Not quite what I was going for. I wanted something more horizontal, only I don't know what to do with the boulders at the end that way. Maybe I'll figure it out later.

I'm not as wicked as the original Portal map designers, but I hope you'll like this one.
It's not too complicated.
Let me know what you think.

PS: I hate maps with boulders. I'm not playing donkey-kong, I'm playing ASCIIpOrtal !  Wink

That was a fun one.

I'll admit, some levels got a little boulder happy. Sorry about that. I should record my solution to the donkey kong levels some time. it's so easy when you know how.

Okay, here's one of mine, stolen from the flash version, there's an interesting thing that pops up around the cube passing through two holes on the floor and you needing to follow them. But it's totally doable and not to hard once you realize (spoiler, highlight to see) to get under the cube as it flies up:
Code:

Talking with Joe, I made a few mockups for a map sharing site.
I understand he does not have time and money to make that, but this would be nice to post and browse maps.

If someone has the time to create that, this would be very interesting.

Browsing maps:

(Colors show the difficulty of each map)
(Note that there is a link to a zip file containing all maps, ready to play)

Map details:

(I hope you don't mind, Joe.)

S' cool. Start a campaign, make me do it.

@MCMLXXIX, your level is kicking my butt. I got right to the end, how are you supposed to pull that off? I'm not even convinced it can be done Got it, but it didn't work the first time or two. I think I was going diagonal right past the catch. You're making me regret having the turn-then-move aspect in the game.

Zugz: Beat the first. Friggin Awesome. Took me a long time to get it tho.

Beat the second. Okay, that sucked. I would never have developed a level that required loading up a fling like that and expending it 3 different way. Not that I didn't want to make a level like that, I just couldn't figure it out. Now that I've played the level, I would never have allowed myself to hate on people like that. I would have filled the second to last room you go to with ladders one (or two) levels up so that they "catch" you so you don't have to throw that penultimate portal so quickly.

Currently having my butt kicked by the third. How do I make the boulder and the boxes all work together for me? It's tricky.

Now I know what it must feel like for the rest of you playing this game the first time.
