As a towlr game anything more given by way of instruction would be a disservice to the game. Pay close attention to how the game reacts to what you type, but if the game’s subtleties prove too much, you can always leverage your advantage.

TAWS7. The 7th TAWS. This entry in the TAWS series, this one is fairly easy to jump in and play. TAWS7 is the first in the TAWS series to use the Curses library and is also the first to be action based.

TAWS7 is an arena shooter, a bit like the classic arcade game robotron if robotron were text based. The action quickly becomes frantic as the longer you play the more enemies appear. While you can fire in 8 directions they can fire at any angle and will constantly on aim. Your best strategy is to keep moving. Fortunately they only take 1 hit to kill, have a limited range, and are not immune to the shots of their team mates.

Move your character with the arrow keys and use the number pad to shoot in 8 directions.

TAWS5 is a sort of typing tutor where your skill with touch typing random blocks of letters nets you a higher score. Press space at any time to pause the game. Press 0 at any time to end your game and see how you did.

A fun way to play this game it to play it with someone else and race for 100 points, or just for 25 if you don’t want to play an endurance round.

TAWS3 is, as you may have guessed, the 3rd game in a series of “Text Adventures Without Swords”. TAWS3 is a strategic fighting game that changes dynamic the more players join in.

Each player has 4 stats: health, strength, stamina, and armor. At the start of the contest each player’s stats are equal. Each turn is two phase. In the first phase you can adjust your own stats using one of the following commands:
“status” : see how you are doing.
“players” : see who is playing this contest.
“heal” : Restore lost health up to 2 times your stamina.
“strength” : Increase your attack strength.
“stamina” : Improve your stamina.
“armor” : Improve your armor rating.
“help” : get a hint in game.

Then in phase 2 you choose which player you will attack.

Like chess, this is a somewhat intellectual game, a simple game with depth and complexity, an open strategy game where individual games can last seemly stable for several rounds and fall apart quickly with a clever move. The addition of more players changes the strategy and dynamic dramatically.

TAWS2 is, as you may have guessed, the 2nd game in a series of “Text Adventures Without Swords”. TAWS2 establishes that aside from the name you can expect very little similarities between the games in the TAWS series. Like TAWS1, everything you need to play the game exists within the game due to a help menu that is easy to find.

In TAWS2 you are attempting to navigate a grid “roguelike” style using the number pad for direction pre-programming your path before pressing enter. In that way this could be called a roguelike practice program. The way it is written, you gain more points for shorter paths. As a challenge to the reader, change it so that you have to take the longest path you can to the exit to net more points, receiving 0 points for a 9999 path.

TAWS stands for “Text Adventure Without Swords”. The 1 indicates that there are more TAWS coming.

This first in the TAWS series is perhaps the simplest a trading simulation could possibility be. Buy low, sell high. One thing TAWS1 does right is make it so that without readme or instructions you can play this game and pretty reliably find yourself doing well quickly. So with that in mind further instruction would be superfluous. Just play the game.

TAWS1 was written by “Entar” who boasts it was made in approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Please note: TAWS1 comes in two source files that must be compiled and then linked together before it will run.
